Chapter 1: Hmph, You Just Want Money, Right?

Northern Mo, sixth year of the Qiyuan reign period. Music filled the air at the estate of the Grand General of the Nation, along with the swelling din of revelers toasting each other.

There was no gold or jade or pearls or other precious things in the bridal chamber in the east compound, but the gilded double happiness characters (囍) and the weeping dragon & phoenix candles set the tone for the joyous newlyweds.

The bride, decked in crimson, was seated properly on the carved, red sandalwood bridal bed, a red bridal veil covering her lowered head.

The sound of bold, heavy footsteps drew near. The two maids guarding the door, Moonglow and Vivid, quickly curtseyed. “Grand General—”

Su Biluo heard their voices and wrung her hands on her lap.

The doors creaked open, followed by the sound of Moonglow and Vivid shutting them again.

Light from the swinging red lanterns hanging under the eaves outside flashed and disappeared.

A few more steps and a pair of large military boots suddenly appeared before her.

There was no getting away from this!

Su Biluo bit her lip, steeled herself, and simply doffed her red veil herself and sprang to her feet.

“Hmph, you just want money, right? This mistress will help you earn it! But forget about me entering your bridal chamber!”

Her small, exquisite face was slightly flushed from anger. She flung her bridal veil to the floor.

The man was very tall. She had to adjust her line of sight and tilt her head up to look him in the eye.

She raised her little pointed chin, not about to be outdone even though she was shorter.

Their eyes locked and each felt their heart thump.

The girl was clever and beautiful, the man lively and spirited.

Su Biluo gasped. She’d never seen such a handsome man!

So vigorous and dashing, just like a man of noble birth.

Those proud, piercingly cold eyes with their sharp gleam, yet also like deep pools of water one could drown in.

But after hearing Su Biluo’s words, those deep pools of water were no longer frigid, but gradually exuded an air of ruminating cunning.

Su Biluo shot past him and hastened to the writing desk.

Her eyebrow shot up, but it was not clear what had gotten her dander up.

So what if he’s handsome? Think his good looks would change her mind?

“Mo Zichen, you married me to raise money for your Mo family army, right? You planned to make use of our Su family’s business and wealth, right? You don’t love me at all, right?”

She got right to the point as she spread out paper and inkstone and took up a brush and inked it.

Except, this damn ancient writing implement was so useless. The ink had already dried so she’d have to rub more.

She used her ink-rubbing time to stare at Mo Zichen, composed as she laid out her plan.

“So, there’s no need for us to pretend at being husband and wife. So how about this: I’ll draw up a contract. Once I’ve raised the Office of the Grand General enough silver for its payroll and expenses you will divorce me and grant me my freedom. What do you say?”

“Do you know how much silver the army needs? How are you—”

Mo Zichen put his hands behind his back and strode over to her, his proud brow arched in derision.

“Hmph—” Snobbish as expected. “How much do you need?”

“At least 300,000 taels, enough to support the army for a year.”

“Alright! 300,000 it is, then!”

Su Biluo didn’t argue, just dipped her brush and wrote vigorously.

She wasn’t too good with a brush, but in the past she used to deal with contracts every day so it was no sweat, easy-peasy, and in no time at all she had drawn it up and signed her name.

“Here, sign it.” She handed over brush and contract.

The decisive, orderly way she had done it, along with her confidence which had come from who knows where, piqued Mo Zichen’s interest.

He didn’t take the contract. Instead, he leaned over her.

His handsome face loomed before her, his move so sudden his defined, thin lips nearly touched hers.

Translator’s Note: Welcome back to those of you who read my previous translation, Quick, Hubby, All Aboard! and hello to those who haven’t.

Madame General is longer than the previous one at 504 chapters (over 100 of those are side stories at the end). This one has a better ending, lol. Though I am reading as I translate so I don’t know what all happens.

This novel is not as fluffy as Hubby, but does feature a strong female lead who asserts herself and a stubborn, somewhat cold male lead, but he’s not a jerk, so that’s good.

I’ve wanted to translate this one for a while and so here I am. No specific release rate. My goal is one a day, but don’t be surprised if I miss days. This won’t be as fast as Hubby.

Hope you like it! I hope I do too!
