Chapter 16: Excuse Me, That’s My Seat

No time to worry about that. She hastily strode forward and politely curtseyed to the old dowager and the old madame, keeping her eyes down as she should, following every movement precisely according to protocol down to the last detail.

“Your daughter-in-law, Su Biluo, pays her respects to Old Dowager and Old Madame. Since coming here your daughter-in-law has been busy helping our general’s office earn money and has yet to pay Old Dowager and Old Madame a visit. Today your daughter-in-law has especially brought some gifts to apologize and ask Old Dowager and Old Madame’s pardon.”

She stole a glance at Moonglow, who then came forward to present the gifts.

As the saying goes, no one will reach out and slap a smiling face. Mo Fengzhi and Meng Zixian might not have been happy with their new daughter-in-law, but they still forced a smile.

“Accept them.” Mo Fengzhi looked up apathetically, then turned to her darling granddaughter and smiled. “My precious Ke’er is here today so I won’t quibble. Rise and eat with us.”

“Thank you, Old Dowager!” Su Biluo rose, her knees aching from remaining half-bent for so long.

She raised her head and smiled sweetly. “Given Old Dowager’s noble background and magnanimous benevolence, I knew you’d never hold it against us ignorant juniors. I’m so lucky to meet Old Dowager and my charmingly beautiful mother-in-law today—”

“Pfft—” Old Dowager cast her a sidelong glance. Suddenly unable to restrain herself, she pointed at Su Biluo and smiled. “Ok ok, don’t overdo it. Hurry and go wash up, your whole face is painted up like a monkey’s ass. It’s disgraceful!”

“Huh?” Su Biluo felt her face and blinked. She bit her lip. Had she put on too much rouge?

No wonder the Mo siblings had looked at her so funny.

Now that the old dowager had mentioned it, the Mo siblings simply sniggered out loud.

Then, the young cousin next to the dowager covered her mouth and let out an urbane, bewitching laugh. Mo Zichen didn’t laugh outright, but his faint smile and scornful visage was the cruelest and made Su Biluo gnash her teeth in anger.

It was all that ancient bronze mirror’s fault. So cloudy, how could she tell what she was doing?

Hmph. Laugh, go on and laugh. At any rate, she wasn’t going to go wash up. If she walked out of there crestfallen they’d likely just laugh harder.

Su Biluo simply smiled, her eyes crescent moons as she acted cute for Mo Fengzhi. “Old Dowager ah, don’t you know that your granddaughter-in-law put on this monkey-ass face on purpose? I felt bad for not coming to serve you two elders tea after I arrived here, so I copied the example of that ancient story where that old man dressed up to please his parents so that I could win Old Dowager and Old Madame over. You see, you see, aren’t you all laughing?”

Mo Fengzhi and Meng Zixian looked at each other and faintly smiled at each other knowingly.

“How thoughtful of you,” Meng Zixian said kindly, “not hesitating to play the clown. You are forgiven. Be seated.”

“Yes Ma’am!”

Su Biluo came over happily and moved an empty stool over and bullishly wedged herself in between Man Yuke and Mo Zichen.

“Excuse me, excuse me, this is my seat.” She carped at Mo Zichen, grinning. “Scooch over, scooch over, you’re not scooching.”

Mo Zichen purposefully didn’t move, staying still as a mountain.

Su Biluo threw the old dowager a fawning smile. “Your granddaughter-in-law has neverending respect for you. I heard Old Dowager used to serve in the front lines with Great-Grandfather, killing scores of enemies, and that your heroic bravery enchanted countless officers and soldiers. Grandmother must have accomplished many heroic deeds. So… So I must sit closer to Grandmother so I can hear your stories and listen to your teachings.”

She had taken it to such a pitiful level with her honeymouthed words that the old dowager was unconsciously smiling. Mo Zichen gave Su Biluo a contemptuous look, then begrudgingly inched over a bit.

Su Biluo was quick and wasted no time sliding in and plopping down on her seat.

  1. I wish MC leave this family. I get they don’t like her but she has to work and make money but they still make fun of her and disregard her. At least wished she was acknowledged that she is hardworking :<
